Tim Walz’s Former Students Praise Him at DNC as ‘Best for the Job’

In the late 1990s, Jacob Reitan established the first gay-straight alliance at Mankato West High School, with faculty advisor Tim Walz, who is now showcased at the Democratic National Convention.

During the event, both current and former students of Tim Walz and his wife Gwen will view their presentation from within the school and also from Chicago’s United Center, where numerous Mankato West alumni have gathered to support their past educators.

“The Walzes epitomize the essence of good, decent individuals,” Jacob Reitan, a 2000 graduate, expressed to The Independent at the convention. Reitan, who is now an attorney and LGBTQ+ rights advocate in Minnesota, cherished the acceptance and safety he felt under Walz’s guidance, particularly as a respected football coach and global geography teacher.

Laura Matson, who helped to initiate the school’s GSA and has been a long-time acquaintance of the Walzes since 1998, highlighted the couple’s crucial backing during a school event dedicated to LGBT+ rights, amidst some parental objections. Their steadfast support, she noted, contributed significantly to fostering a more inclusive, diverse, and accepting community.

Tim Walz, remembered fondly as “Mr. Walz” at Mankato West, also involved himself in various school activities ranging from sports coaching to prom decorations and theater set design, based on a design by his student, Amanda Hinkle.

Amanda Hinkle, now a theater educator in New York and present at the Chicago convention, remarked on the surreal nature of seeing the Walzes on a national platform, applauding them as ideal candidates for their roles due to their dedicated and caring approach.

Tim Walz will accept his party’s nomination officially handed over by Ben Ingman, a former student and neighbor, also coached by Walz. The ceremony is expected to see the participation of former Mankato West football players and their head coach, Rick Sutton, with a special video feature of various alumni including Reitan.

Hinkle, prior to the convention, reflected on her connections with the Walzes, linking back to their Nebraska roots. Meanwhile, Ida Moen Johnson, a University of Wisconsin Madison lecturer, and Richelle Norton, another Mankato West alumna, echoed praises for the educational standards and the personal engagement the Walzes brought to their roles, influencing their students well beyond the classroom.

Norton spoke highly of the consistent character and Midwest work ethic the Walzes have maintained over the years, underscoring the need to share their story and their unwavering commitment to education and community.
