NMSP officer attacked with AR-15 style rifle

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — A New Mexico State Police officer in Farmington Monday night was traveling east along Pinon Hills when he saw a car speeding west. As he initiated a traffic stop the suspect exited the vehicle armed with an AR-15-style rifle and fired at least 50 rounds toward the officer’s unit as the cop retreated to safety. The suspect, identified as 40 year old Fernando Silva, was chased by the NMSP officer but the police vehicle became disabled by the gunshots. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office said Silva was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon.
