Bill allowing outdoor drinking ‘entertainment zones’ in California takes big step

( KRON ) — California cities could soon establish “entertainment zones” permitting outdoor drinking. Senate Bill 969 was approved by the state Senate and will now head to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office, state senator Scott Wiener announced Tuesday.

The bill is intended to help cities recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, which devastated foot traffic in cities including San Francisco. San Francisco and San Jose both sponsored the bill, along with the California Nightlife Association.

Under the bill, cities can designate “entertainment zones” where restaurants and bars can sell alcohol. Similar programs are in place in Michigan, Ohio and Virginia.
