Resolution to consider moving obelisk to national cemetery slated for final vote following trial

Sep. 17—A state district judge is still deliberating the future of the toppled Plaza obelisk as the City Council plans to move forward next week with a vote on whether to explore moving the monument to the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Following a two-day trial last week in a civil case against the city of Santa Fe and Mayor Alan Webber over the destruction of the Soldiers’ Monument, Judge Matthew Wilson ordered both sides to submit their briefs within two weeks, and he would issue a ruling sometime afterward.

Wilson’s decision isn’t likely to come before Sept. 25, when the council is scheduled to vote on a proposed resolution calling for the city to study the feasibility of reconstructing the 33-foot obelisk, built in honor of Civil War Union soldiers, at the national cemetery, where hundreds of soldiers who died in Civil War battles were laid to rest.
