California lawmakers begin hearings on Newsom’s oil and gas proposal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California lawmakers in the Assembly on Wednesday held the first hearing as part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order for a special legislative session on gas prices and oil supply.

The governor wants lawmakers to consider his proposal that would require oil refiners in the state to have backup fuel available to address supply shortages caused by unplanned maintenance or outages. His administration has said those situations can cause gas price spikes.

“When the spikes happen, it triggers profits. It’s a true fact,” Siva Gunda, the Vice Chairman of the California Energy Commission, told the panel of Assemblymembers…
