Florida Celebrating Record Nesting Year For Endangered Sea Turtle Species

The smallest and most endangered sea turtle in the world is setting records in Florida.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), 2024 was a banner year for Kemp’s ridley nests in the state, with 24 already confirmed for the season compared to a total of 10 in 2023 and just eight in 2022.

“We are happy to share that 2024 is shaping up to be a record-breaking year for Kemp’s ridley nests in Florida and for leatherback nesting on the Florida Gulf Coast,” FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) announced on Facebook. “Additionally, loggerheads and leatherbacks had a good season, but green turtle nest numbers remain low.”…
