Man accused of killing Colorado mom, son in crash pleads guilty to vehicular homicide charges

BROOMFIELD, Colo. — A man accused of driving drunk near a Colorado high school and causing a crash that killed a woman and her teenage son pleaded guilty to two vehicular homicide charges Thursday, court records show.

On Dec. 12, 2023, a crash in the area of Broomfield High School, near Main Street and Miramonte Boulevard, took the lives of Melissa Powell, 46, and her 16-year-old son, Riordan Powell. Three days later, 37-year-old Jose Menjivar was arrested in connection with the crash.

An arrest affidavit from the Broomfield Police Department says witnesses of the crash estimated that Menjivar was driving his pickup truck at a speed between 80 mph and 100 mph in a 40 mph zone prior to the crash, passing several vehicles by driving on the double yellow centerline…
