CARTHAGE, New York (WWNY) – This morning, members of the Carthage Community held their annual suicide awareness walk.

The annual 22-minute trek across the village aims to educate folks on veterans’ mental health struggles, particularly when they lead to suicide. Those 22 minutes signify the 22 veterans who take their own lives each day. The event was coordinated by the members of Carthage’s local VFW Post 7227, along with community organizations like NRCIL, CGJC, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“We want the community to be aware that there are services and things out there to help them,” Deanna Guyette, the suicide prevention walk coordinator said. “We have suicide prevention, but awareness is the first step in the prevention process.”…
