Gulf of Mexico likley to launch next tropical system, local impacts possible in the Carolinas

WXII 12 Meteorologists and experts at the National Hurricane Center continue to monitor the Gulf of Mexico for a new tropical system.

This low is forecast to emerge near the Yucatan Peninsula, drift north into the Gulf of Mexico, and eventually track into the Southeast. On the current forecast tracks, Georgia and the Carolinas may experience tropical conditions by Friday, September 7 through Sunday, September 29. This new tropical system may grow into Tropical Storm Helene.

TROPICAL OUTLOOK

There is a low chance for development with Atlantic systems through next week. There is a 70% chance of development in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico by the end of the coming week. This may bring tropical conditions to the Southeast with a rainy and windy final weekend of September in the Piedmont Triad.

Once the storm forms, a track may shift many times before landfall. The track shift and the size of the storm as it aproaches the Gulf Coast for landfall will also mean changes to rainfall totals. Here is a look at two different forecast models for possible rainfall totals through Sunday, September 29
