B-N NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet seeks to grow unity, disperse division

BLOOMINGTON — Nearly 350 members, dignitaries and residents of the Twin Cities, from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, attended the annual Bloomington-Normal NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet Saturday night at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Bloomington.

“This room is a microcosm of the reality that we want to experience,” said State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, who delivered the night’s keynote remarks. Ammons is running for reelection in Illinois’ 103rd District in November, but does not have an opponent.

“We want to erase this ‘race’ thing,” she said during her remarks. “We want to get rid of that. That’s a made-up fiction that has made its way into every single thing that we do and experience.”…
