Man turns himself in after telling Phoenix police he fled hit-and-run that killed 1

Phoenix police arrested a man who turned himself in on Sunday morning after police say he admitted to being the driver who fled on foot from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run on Saturday.

Department spokesperson Sgt. Robert Scherer said officers arrested and interviewed 24-year-old Travis Smith before he was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries he suffered from the collision. He was later medically cleared and booked into jail on multiple counts, including manslaughter and fleeing the scene of a collision involving an injury or fatality.

Scherer said police had responded to the area of 16th Street and Camelback Road at around 12:33 a.m. where they found a man, later identified as 29-year-old Dillon Mares with serious injuries. Fire personnel attempted life-saving measures on Mares, but later pronounced him deceased at the scene…
