First Look: Texas

Mississippi State and Texas will meet on the football field this Saturday afternoon for the first time since 1999. The last meeting between the Bulldogs and Longhorns came in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day following the 1998 season. Mississippi State won the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division during that season. Texas fielded an explosive offense led by Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams.

The all-time series between State and Texas is tied at 2-2. The inaugural meeting between the two schools came back in 1921. The Longhorns were victorious that day, 54-7. It was the final year of Coach Fred Holtkamp’s two-year run as the Aggie head coach. George “Mac” McGowan scored Mississippi A&M’s lone touchdown on a one-yard quarterback sneak.

It would be seventy years before the Dawgs and Steers would face off again and this time it was different. Coach Jackie Sherrill, a regular Longhorn nemesis, led State to a 13-6 win in Starkville during the 1991 season. A year later, Sherrill’s team led by quarterback Sleepy Robinson won in Austin, 28-10…
