Heads up, Las Cruces fitness enthusiasts and casual gym-goers, you’ll need to mark a brief pause on your workout routine come early October. The Meerscheidt Recreation Center, located at 1600 E. Hadley Ave., will shut its doors, but not for refurbishment or your typical maintenance drill. Instead, the entire premises will take a backseat to the 2024 Whole Enchilada Softball Tournament happening over at Hadley Sports Complex. Strap on those spectator shoes, because your gym spot will morph into a sporting hotspot, according to the City of Las Cruces.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, routines will be disrupted when the center will remain closed to public access. While residents eager to hit the weights might find themselves inconvenienced, the city buzzes with the energy of softball enthusiasts looking forward to the tournament. Having bat and ball take the stage, the Meerscheidt Recreation Center has decided to sit this one out, pursuing the balls and strikes of the game airing throughout Hadley Sports Complex.

Worries about missed leg days and Zumba classes should only be short-lived. The city confirmed that the Recreation Center isn’t planning on ghosting its loyal patrons for long. Normal operation hours and programming are expected to resume after the weekend, specifically at the break of dawn, 8 a.m., Monday, Oct. 7. Until then, locals are encouraged to check out the tournament or explore alternative venues to keep their fitness spirits high…
