Cru Cafe to close after 23 years

Longtime Charleston favorite Cru Cafe today announced that its last day of service will be Saturday. Owner and Executive Chef John Zucker said that after 23 years, the restaurant no longer has the kind of staff that can support a successful business.

In a letter posted to Instagram, Zucker reminisced on opening the Pinckney Street cafe two decades ago, but concluded, “restaurants are living, breathing things. They thrive when they have the people to support them.

“And right now, the industry is in the middle of a storm that we just can’t fight anymore. The truth is, you can’t run a restaurant without a team. And when you can’t find the staff — no matter how much heart you have — it’s time to face reality.”
