The Isle of Palms issues new ordinance prohibiting residents from feeding wildlife

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD) – Isle of Palms council members voted 6-1 on Tuesday to pass a new ordinance that prohibits feeding wildlife other than stray cats, dogs, and some birds.

Officials said that since 2021, they have noticed increased raccoon sightings, leading to some residents’ complaints. Coyotes have also been a significant issue on the island, with several pets reportedly attacked.

“As we’re looking for ways to address coyotes and try to reduce the potential for an encounter in a neighborhood setting with a coyote, we looked at what we could do differently. We found a way to say the ordinance prohibited feeding wildlife. We could address the issue of sick raccoons or other types of wildlife being fed,” said Chief Kevin Cornett, the Isle of Palms Police Department…
