UPDATE: Helene forecast for the Twin Tiers

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Thanks to Helene, we may have a little more rain to come. Saturday was initially going to be a sunnier day, but thanks to what will eventually be the remnants of the powerful storm, a shower or two is added to the forecast to account for that.

Our current conditions around the area will stay rainy for at least another day, as advertised. However, obviously the spotlight is on Hurricane Helene and the problems it is going to cause not just along the Gulf states, but to areas north, west and eventually east of where it makes landfall.

To be honest this has been a very difficult day for Meteorologists. We had to really look at several factors to get a usable forecast. The storm will undergo what is called the Fujiwhara Effect. That is when two areas of low pressure attract each other, when they normally would repel each other. In rare cases, two storms will absorb each other to create a larger one instead of staying apart. What’s left of Helene and that current low bringing rain to the southern states, will end up spreading it’s energy northeast once it completes a few rotations across the midsouth.

By Saturday, clouds will invade our skies again, as the low moves slightly north and east with an increasing small chance of a shower by Saturday before completely heading out to sea. Then we can salvage the rest of the weekend…
