Governor Vetoes Property Restitution Bill

California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have allowed people to reclaim property taken from them through racially motivated eminent domain. He cited a lack of a state agency to carry out the provisions of the bill.

Reparations Efforts Face Challenges

Newsom also vetoed a bill that would have created an agency to implement reparations recommendations from the state’s reparations task force. However, he signed a bill that prioritizes funding for socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in education grants.

Legislative Package Awaits Response

Several other reparations bills from the California Legislative Black Caucus await Newsom’s decision. The bills aim to address systemic racism through various measures, including a formal apology from the state and addressing food and health inequities.

Bills Fail to Pass

Ten bills from the reparations package failed to pass the legislature. These bills included bans on involuntary servitude and solitary confinement, funding for violence reduction programs, and measures to improve life expectancy and educational outcomes for specific groups.
