Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024: 5 things you need to know

MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Good morning, mid-Michigan! Happy Thursday, the weekend is so close! Check out these five stories we’re following right now.

1. Bay Road just north of Shattuck Road in Saginaw Township reopened this morning after it was shut down because of a fire. The fire happened at Arabilla Mediterranean Foods and Deli. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, according to the Saginaw Township Fire Department. Investigators should be on the scene some time this morning.

2. People who live in Bay City feeling relieved after a 41-year-old was arrested in connection to the murder of Justie Stilwell. That’s after the Bay City Department of Public Safety and Michigan State Police carried out a search warrant at a home on the west side. Last week, investigators found some of Stilwell’s remains at the boat launch on North Johnson Street. More remains were found in a different area on Wednesday. The 40-year-old suspect is in Bay County Jail.

3. State lawmakers pushing for a new bill called “Jordan’s Law.” It’s named after 17-year-old Jordan Demay, who died by suicide after being extorted for money online. The law spells out penalties for committing sextortion, requires education about its dangers and urges kids to come forward if they’re a victim. There are three proposals written into Jordan’s Law and all three have been passed to the House Committee on Criminal Justice for consideration…
