Council OKs night vision project for SWAT teams

DOWNTOWN AKRON — Summit County Council approved a contract with Steele Industries Inc. for a night vision project for various jurisdictions and special operations teams at the Sept. 23 meeting.

According to the legislation, the $169,048 contract with Steele Industries Inc. includes night vision monoculars and infrared illuminators to enhance capabilities for high-risk incident resolution for the Akron and Cuyahoga Falls police department SWAT teams, as well as the Summit County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.

Faylin Thurn, senior administrator for the Department of Public Safety, said this is the second time the department has had to go out to bid for the project as the first time did not solicit enough vendors. She added that although Steele Industries Inc. was not the lowest bid, the lower bid was missing equipment and Steele met all of the specifications. Thurn noted the project is completely funded through a State Homeland Security Program grant and the county will not pay for anything…
