Battery charges against prominent Oakland activist dropped

A high-profile battery case involving an Oakland councilmember’s partner was dismissed by an Alameda County judge last week.

Just before it was set to go to trial, the district attorney agreed to drop the case against community activist Tur-Ha Ak, who was charged in January with misdemeanor battery after a conflict broke out at the closure of a West Oakland homeless camp in February 2023.

Ak, whose legal name is Earl Harper, was charged with physically attacking another advocate, Vincent Ray Williams III, after Williams accused Ak’s partner, Councilmember Carroll Fife, of trying to prevent the encampment closure…
