Record setting warmth through the weekend

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Happy Friday, Utah! It’s been another day of flirting with record hot temperatures across the Beehive State. Of course, along with the record heat is plenty of sunshine and very dry air. Looks like it’s going to be a warm or even steamy Beehive Blitz Friday night.

It’s been a hot week, but believe it or not, it’s looking like it may just get a bit warmer for the upcoming weekend. Our strong heat dome continues to be the main culprit for the heat we’ve seen, and as it slides east it’ll kick up a prominent southerly wind over Utah, transporting the hot southwest desert air across the Beehive State. As you might guess, record heat is looking likely again this weekend. On Saturday, Salt Lake is expected to soar to 95°, which is 20° above seasonal norms and 4° above the record high. St. George won’t miss out on records either, with a forecasted high of 103° and a record of 100°. Sunday’s temperatures won’t be too far off with 94° in Salt Lake, breaking the 91° record, and St. George at 101°, which would break the record by a degree.

We are tracking a series of fronts for next week, which may help to ease the heat for October. A dry cold front will slide past northern Utah Sunday evening into Monday. This front will not bring rain chances, but it may bring a few clouds during the day and a slight breeze. Unfortunately for southern Utah, the cooler temperatures will be limited to the north. By Monday, northern valley temperatures will be knocked back into the low 80s, which is still about 5-10° above average, but nowhere near records. On the other hand, St. George will continue challenging records into Tuesday, but should start falling by a couple degrees by midweek.

After this run of heat, St. George will likely claim the second-most 100°+ days in a year, and if they hit 100° again on Monday, it will be the latest triple-digit day ever. Salt Lake will tie their latest 90° day this Sunday but will drop off before having the chance to break it…
