With high temperatures and gusty winds in the forecast, PG&E announced power shutoffs are “likely” in Northern California . The outages, which are expected on Monday and Tuesday, are a preemptive measure to prevent PG&E’s equipment from sparking wildfires.
According to the agency , residents in 13 California counties can expect impacts this week. Customers in Alameda, Butte, Colusa, Contra Costa, Glenn, Humboldt, Napa, Shasta, Sonoma, Tehama and Trinity counties are listed on PG&E’s shutoff page. PG&E warned about 13,455 customers in the 13 counties. In the Bay Area, notices were sent to 346 customers in Alameda County, 286 in Contra Costa County, 140 in Napa County and 268 in Sonoma County, PG&E said.
The Bay Area office of the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the first half of the work week . They are forecasting temperatures of up to 105 in inland locations and up to 93 in coastal spots. The advisory begins at 11a.m. Monday and expires on Wednesday at 11 p.m.
This year has already dwarfed the fire statistics from 2023. Last year, 5,407 wildland fires burned 285,000 acres. This year so far, over 6,400 fires have consumed nearly 1 million acres.
