Women’s soccer stumbles against UC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University battled hard but ultimately fell 2-0 to the University of Charleston in a tightly contested MEC matchup on Sunday at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The loss moves the Yellow Jackets to 3-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play, while Charleston advanced to 5-2-0, staying undefeated in the league.

The Yellow Jackets controlled much of the game, outshooting Charleston 17-12 and creating numerous scoring opportunities, but were unable to beat a determined Golden Eagles defense. After a scoreless first half, Charleston’s Juliette Lucas netted two goals in the second half, despite WVSU’s pressure. Lucas struck in the 58th minute and again in the 69th, but West Virginia State continued to push forward, forcing Charleston’s goalkeeper, Jordan Maynard, to make eight saves to keep her clean sheet.
