Banks not surprised to see Vols’ secondary ‘playing extremely consistent’

defensive coordinator Tim Banks knew going into this season that the Vols would be relying on several younger, less experienced defensive backs after replacing several veterans who played for them last year. But he’s not surprised that Tennessee’s new-look secondary has gotten off to a good start.

The Vols were optimistic that their mix of veterans who had awaited an opportunity to start, newcomers and other young players would make up a productive — and perhaps even improved — secondary this season, and the results have been impressive so far. Tennessee is ranked fourth nationally in pass defense, allowing just 125.3 passing yards per game, heading into the Vols’ game Saturday night at Arkansas.

None of Tennessee’s first four opponents has thrown for more than 186 yards. The Vols are allowing 5.2 yards per pass attempt, which ranks 10th nationally…
