Harrisburg district celebrates completion of $21.6-million renovation of elementary school

Steele Elementary Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Tour

A $21.6-million renovation of Steele Elementary School, in the Harrisburg School District, was celebrated Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting and tours to show off the changes.

Originally built in the 1930s, Steele was closed in 2011 and reopened on Sept. 3 for the 2024-25 school year. It serves almost 400 kindergarten through fifth-grade students and families who live in Harrisburg’s Uptown area.

The project was made possible, according to the district, with federal money from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund that it received during the pandemic.
