WEST ENGLEWOOD — As plans to adapt a closed school into a vital affordable housing development move forward in Englewood, local leaders are calling on stakeholders to continue the momentum for investing in the community.
Bees buzzed under the October sky Tuesday during the groundbreaking ceremony for Earle Apartments. The $33.5 million investment, led by Wisconsin-based developers Gorman & Company, will revitalize the former Charles Warrington Earle School, transforming the long-vacant building into 50 affordable apartments and social services offices.
The West Englewood School, 6121 S. Hermitage Ave., was one of 50 schools former Mayor Rahm Emanuel closed in 2013. Of the 50, six schools were closed in the Greater Englewood community.
