ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) – Our OhioMeansJobs Student Employee of the Month is Giy’lynn Grisby, a student at Lima City Schools who is getting a head start on her career with over 7 months left until she graduates.
Giy’lynn Grisby discovered an interest in nursing through a career tech class she took during her junior year. Her desire to help people couldn’t wait for her diploma, so she’s spending her senior year working part-time as an STNA at the Lima Convalescent Home.
“There’s a lot of people here that need help, and they need people to take care of them. I just like the residents because they’re just so sweet and everybody’s nice here. I want to go for Apollo for my LPN and maybe go to Kentucky State University like my sister did,” said Guy’lynn Grisby, a senior at Lima Senior High School.
Her supervisors say that Giy’Lynn works hard and is the kind of employee who puts a smile on a resident’s face when she walks into the room. They add that she is a great fit for the nursing field, and there is no doubt she will be successful.
“I’m 100% confident in her. I know, I can tell that she has that drive, I can tell that she has that care, that charisma, for the residents, so I don’t think anything is going to really slow her down. I’m just really proud of her and what she’s accomplished so far, and I’m really excited to see where her life is going to take her in the future,” stated Vanessa Hooks, director of nursing at Lima Convalescent Home.
Even though she knew what she wanted to do after graduating, Giy’lynn still needed help choosing between the different education options out there. But thanks to OhioMeansJobs, she had access to a job coach to help her come to a decision.
“So, we talk to them about what colleges they want to go to, if they want to stay local, if they want to go out of state. And we kind of just help them look at the pros and cons based on, again, what they’re wanting to do and what their future career plan is. So, we talk about things like cost, tuition rates. We have a lot of great connections and relationships with a lot of the local universities, so we’re able to connect them personally with those institutions as well,” said Tova Brunk, a job coach for OhioMeansJobs Allen County…
