Louisiana leads the nation in gun deaths among children. To combat the problem, over 1,000 biometric gun safes have been distributed in the New Orleans area, and more people are locking up their guns as a result.
The safes, which use a key, fingerprint, or code to secure guns, were distributed at community events, neighborhood meetings, libraries, and churches through a partnership with the New Orleans Health Department, Children’s Hospital New Orleans, the Louisiana Department of Health, and the Louisiana chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics starting in 2023.
