Man accused of shooting during Española protest reaches plea deal

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The trial for Ryan Martinez, 24, has been canceled after a plea deal was reached. Martinez was scheduled to begin trial Monday, October 7 after being accused of shooting Jacob Johns in September 2023 during a protest against the Juan de Oñate statue outside of the Rio Arriba County Annex.

Court records show that the trial was canceled after a last minute plea deal was reached. Martinez was charged with attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
