SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – The American Cancer Society found that breast cancer mortality rates have been dropping steadily since 1989 , but in recent years, newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer have been on the rise.
“One out of eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and 30 percent of cancer diagnoses will be breast cancer,” Christie Finnegan with the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in Sioux City said.

Research has found that the link between the rise in cases and the decline in deaths is due to an increase in awareness and routine mammogram screenings.
“The mammogram will detect smaller abnormalities in your breast before you can actually feel them, so that’s why we like to do screenings,” UnityPoint Health nurse practitioner Tonya Flaugh said. “The earlier we find the abnormality, or the cancer, the better the outcome, or prognosis, it is.”…
