Secret Service Reform Needed to Prevent Future Attacks, Report Says

Additional Coverage:

An independent review of the Secret Service has revealed serious systemic issues following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July. The review found that the agency is “bureaucratic, complacent, and static,” despite increased risks and technological advancements.

The review highlights a lack of critical thinking and a “do more with less” attitude among Secret Service personnel. It also cites a troubling lack of cohesion with local law enforcement during event planning and a shortage of experienced agents.

The panel conducting the review has called for new leadership at the Secret Service, emphasizing the need for a change in culture. They have recommended restructuring the protective office, implementing new training initiatives, and improving communication technologies.

Specific to the July 13th assassination attempt, the review found failures in securing the building where the shots were fired and mitigating the line of sight. The panel recommends implementing integrated communications, mandatory situation reports, and advanced line of sight mitigations.

The report’s findings echo those of the Secret Service’s internal mission assurance review. The panel emphasizes that without reforms, similar security failures are likely to occur in the future.
