Southwest Airlines has announced a groundbreaking sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply agreement with Valero Marketing and Supply Company, the largest of its kind in Illinois. The two-year deal will bring at least 3.6 million gallons of SAF to Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) starting as early as Q4 2024, with the potential to expand to 25 million gallons.
This SAF, derived from waste-based feedstocks like used cooking oil and animal tallow, could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 84% compared to conventional jet fuel. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker praised the agreement, emphasizing the state’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy.
