This grand Sheboygan home was shaken off its foundation by an explosion in February 1944

SHEBOYGAN – A stately home on a quiet street wasn’t so quiet one day in February 1944 when the house of Dr. Edmund and Josephine Reiss Knauf was shaken off its foundation by a big explosion.

Lady Luck, fortunately, paid a visit to the home at North Sixth Street and St. Clair Avenue when no one was harmed in the explosion at the home, according to Sheboygan Press clippings from the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center.

It was a stately home that the Knauf family had a considerable investment in. In 1925, Dr. Knauf was approved for a $3,600 addition and alterations to his home, according to a 1925 Sheboygan Press clipping. That was a substantial amount when you consider a home with an unattached garage cost at the same time between $6,000 and $8,000.
