Erin Smith, the widow of a police officer who died by suicide after the January 6th Capitol riot, spoke out in court. She recounted how rioter Dana Bell contributed to her husband’s injuries and harassment, leading to his death.

Prosecutor’s Testimony

Footage from Jeff Smith’s body camera revealed Bell grabbing at his baton and confronting him. She was also heard berating him, saying, “Get a real job… No one supports you.”

Bell’s Apology

Bell expressed remorse during the hearing, stating, “It was my fault. It was my choice.” She also apologized directly to Erin Smith.

Bell’s Sentencing

A federal judge sentenced Bell to 17 months in prison for her role in the Capitol siege. She is one of over 600 defendants who have faced incarceration for their involvement in the attack.

Erin Smith’s Advocacy

Erin Smith has become an advocate for line-of-duty death benefits for officers who died by suicide after the riot. Several officers who responded to the Capitol that day have also taken their own lives.
