City looks to redevelop former Central State Hospital campus

INDIANAPOLIS – The city of Indianapolis is exploring new redevelopment opportunities on the near westside.

The Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD) is looking for ideas from developers to repurpose three buildings on the former campus of Central State Hospital. The psychiatric treatment hospital operated from the 1840s until closing down for good in 1994.

“Since then, it has sat vacant, but during its heyday it was treating patients with a variety of mental illnesses,” said Eddie Shei, Senior Project Manager with the DMD.

A lot of the redevelopment work in this area has already been done over the course of the last few decades, according to the DMD. This includes the building of homes, a charter school, a senior housing facility, and a city park but there is still a lot more to come with the remaining land.

“These are really the last three sites to get us across the finish line,” Shei said. “We are hoping to see more investment come to the near west side of Indianapolis and hope what we bring out here to Central State is an exciting development.”…
