Springfield police clarify Safe Haven laws, protection for parents in Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – After a weeks old baby boy was left on the porch of an apartment on Worthing Street in Springfield, questions were raised regarding the Safe Haven Law in Massachusetts.

The law, passed 20 years ago this month, allows a parent to legally surrender their infant up to seven days old to a hospital, police department or manned fire station without facing charges. After that, and depending on the location where the child left, it’s a case-by-case basis.

State Representative Carlos Gonzalez explained that incidents like this are exactly why the state passed the Safe Haven Act of Massachusetts decades ago…
