Widow Votes for First Time at 81

Additional Coverage:

Betty Cartledge, an 81-year-old great-grandmother from Georgia, recently cast her first-ever vote.

Despite being influenced by her late husband who never voted, Cartledge was inspired to participate in the 2024 presidential election. She overcame her illiteracy by relying on the assistance of her niece and a poll worker.

“I’m proud my voice is finally being heard,” Cartledge said. “It was like getting your first date or being baptized.”

Cartledge hopes her story encourages others who face similar barriers to participate in elections. She believes her vote can bring about positive changes, especially in light of recent personal and financial challenges.

Cartledge plans to continue voting in future elections and encourages anyone who has not yet voted to do so.
