Gadsden gets grant to add trees around perimeter of old steel plant site

Gadsden is going to get its first “urban forest,” beautifying an area that once was a hub of its industrial past.

The City Council on Oct. 15 approved the acceptance of an $80,000 grant from the Alabama Forestry Commission to plant trees around parts of the old Republic/Gulf States Steel plant property.

The trees will be planted along Chestnut Street heading down the hill from Forrest Cemetery toward Alabama City; along a stretch of Black Creek; and along Hickory Street in South Gadsden…
