BOISE — The rebuilt Fire Station 5 unveiled Friday will be the Boise Fire Department’s fourth station on the corner of 16th Street and Front Street. Named the “Home of the Sleepless Knights,” the site has been a cornerstone of the department since 1906.
The new, 15,000-square-foot station, which remains the oldest and busiest location operated by the department, will feature a new, all-electric operation as well as a dedicated decontamination room for crew members’ gear, additions that are looking to make the newest station rendition the cleanest and safest yet. Anticipated to open in the first half of next year, an adjacent museum will provide the public a deeper look into the fire department and the history of its 16th Street location.
“Five is fairly unique,” Boise Fire Chief Mark Niemeyer said. “It is the busiest firehouse in the state of Idaho on a pretty regular basis.”…
