Mail Carriers Secure Contract with Pay Raises and Safety Upgrades

Around 200,000 mail carriers have reached an agreement with the U.S. Postal Service for a new contract that will include backdated pay increases and a commitment to provide air-conditioned delivery trucks.

The deal, which must be approved by union members, extends through November 2026. It marks the end of the mail carriers’ work without a contract since May 2023.

Both the union and the Postal Service expressed satisfaction with the agreement. The union’s president highlighted the recognition of carriers’ contributions and the reduction in time it takes new workers to reach the top pay level.

The Postal Service emphasized that the contract aligns with its modernization plans and customer needs. It includes annual pay increases and cost-of-living adjustments.

Notably, the Postal Service has committed to “make every effort” to provide air-conditioned mail trucks. This is a significant safety improvement, as mail carriers have faced challenges with overheating vehicles.

The new contract also requires the Postal Service to discuss any plans for purchasing non-air-conditioned mail trucks with the union. This ensures that future vehicles meet safety standards.

The ratification process for the contract is expected to take several weeks. Rural mail deliverers are not covered by this contract, as they are represented by a separate union.
