MEDARYVILLE — Every fall, sandhill cranes migrate south, making a pit stop en masse at the Jasper-Pulaski Wildlife Area in one of the Calumet Region’s greatest natural spectacles.

The massive cranes can stand more than four feet tall, with wingspans that stretch up to seven feet. They fly down from Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and Ontario, Canada to winter in warmer climes in Georgia and Florida.

People can see thousands of birds stopping to feed and roost in Jasper-Pulaski Wildlife Area at 5822 Fish and Wildlife Lane in Medaryville. They start to fly in September and keep passing through until December, Jasper-Pulaski Wildlife Area Property Manager Nick Echterling said…
