An alarming new study has revealed the states with the largest increase in car crash fatalities. Keep reading to see where Tennessee ranks on the list.
10 Years of Data from NHTSA Analyzed
Research released by Bader Scott, a personal injury law firm out of Georgia, analyzes data collected from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The data, which was grouped by state, spans a 10 year window from 2013 – 2022.
How The Research Was Calculate
The total number of fatalities were calculated for each year. Additionally, a percentage of change was determined by calculating the average number of fatalities in the two 5-year windows, according to a press release.
The average number of fatalities for the five-year periods of 2013 – 2017 and 2018 – 2022 was calculated. Finally, the percentage change of these averages was calculated and then ranked to determine which states have seen the largest increase.
Top Crash Fatality Increases in the Nation
Oregon tops the list with an increase of 31.61% in fatalities between 2013-2017 when there were 410.6 deaths, and 2018-2022 when there were 540.4 deaths. Arizona saw the second largest increase in crash fatalities with a jump of 23.63%.
Where Does Tennessee Land on the List
Tennessee actually saw an increase of 21.14% in crash fatalities, placing the state in the number 4 position on the list. There were an average of 996.2 fatalities between 2013-2017, and an average of 1,206.8 from 2018-2022.
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and North Dakota all saw a reduction in car crash fatalities.
