On Friday, a California man pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Circuit Court to multiple theft charges related to a scheme that defrauded over $1.1 million from an elderly Silver Spring resident, with sentencing set for December 9, 2024; the case marks the first conviction in a series of similar international gold bar scams targeting vulnerable victims in the county.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, before the Honorable Margaret Schweitzer, defendant, Wenhui Sun, 34, of Lake Arbor, CA, pleaded guilty to charges of theft scheme over $100,000, theft over $100,000, attempted theft over $100,000 and conspiracy to commit theft over $100,000.
