SAN JOSE—Careless turnovers, untimely penalties, and unseasonably hot weather could have added up for a miserable homecoming football game on Saturday.

But defense stepped up, helping the San Jose State Spartans (5-2, 3-1 MW) win 24-14 vs. the Wyoming Cowboys (1-6, 1-2 MW) at CEFCU Stadium. Despite the positive result, the postgame tone was rather somber.
