A Wildwood man was arrested on drug charges during a traffic stop when a K-9 sniffed out narcotics, leading him to admit their location.

An officer conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a grey Toyota Tacoma, later identified as 35-year-old John Dallas Sumner, for a stop bar violation he saw at West Main Street and North Truett Avenue around 10:33 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

Upon witnessing the violation, the officer initiated the traffic stop by turning on his overhead emergency lights after the vehicle made a left turn onto Main Street. The vehicle came to a stop, and the officer got out of his patrol car to approach Sumner, the report said.

A K-9 unit arrived on scene as the officer spoke with Sumner. The K-9 conducted a free-air sniff around the outside of the vehicle, positively alerting to the odor of narcotics. The officer had Sumner step out of the vehicle to explain the written warning for the stop violation and so the officers could search the vehicle, the report said…
