Sisters from Maiden, Newton-Conover qualify for state tennis tournament

Maiden sisters Liz and Neeley Campbell advanced to the final round of the 2A West Region tennis tournament in doubles on Saturday.

The duo beat Mackenzie and Marissa Pendleton of Burns in the semifinals (6-4, 7-5) to advance to the final round against Raleigh Prichard and Reese Redden of Hendersonville. The Campbell sisters forced a tiebreaker with the overall number one seeds in the second set. Prichard and Redden took the tiebreaker 7-3.

Sara and Jenna Sain of Newton-Conover also qualified for the state tournament with a fourth-place finish. They fell to Prichard and Redden in the semifinals and then forced Pendleton and Pendleton to a tiebreaker in the third-place match. They fell in the tiebreaking set 7-3.

Other regional qualifiers

Symone Akel and Reece Miller of Fred T. Foard fell 6-3, 6-0 in the second round of the 3A regional doubles tournament. Addison Cox and Gabby Spatz of St. Stephens lost in the first round.
