Students de-stress from YAB event

SAN JOSE, CALIF. — A recap to September, in honor of its name as the suicide prevention month, on Sept. 13 the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) hosted a suicide and mental health awareness event at Silver Creek’s X-Quad.

Through the partnership between YAB and the Mental Health and Wellness Center, the suicide prevention gathering was carried out. With the help of sophomore Cameron Do and senior Uyen Tran, the organizers from YAB, the event consisted of “Kindness Notes.” These were post-its participants could fill out with heartfelt messages meant to boost confidence and spread compassion for those who struggle with their mental health. Followed by participants receiving slime freebies during the gathering.

According to Cameron of YAB, “We want to kind of spread the word, so today we’re giving out freebies and then kind notes for people who need it.” At Silver Creek, there is an annual mental health and wellness fair to expand resources and knowledge of mental health struggles, such as depression and anxiety. YAB is one of the many organizations who contribute to promoting materials for students, heavily shown in setting up gatherings like this suicide prevention event. YAB hopes to make school a safe space for students through not only social events, but encourages the Silver Creek community to visit the calming space whenever students feel they’re not at their full mental capacity…
