For Hampton council challengers, top priorities include broadening tax base, attracting new businesses

Hampton City Council could see a drastic overhaul on Nov. 5, as four of six council seats are up for election.

Incumbent council members Chris Bowman, Hope Harper and Billy Hobbs seek reelection but face competition from six new candidates — Randy Bowman, Carolyn Campbell, LaToya Fleming, Whalan McDew, Janice Richison and Aaron Weaver. The top three vote-getters will end up on the council.

But those aren’t the only council seats up for grabs. Councilman Jimmy Gray is vacating his seat to run for mayor, triggering a special election to fill the remaining two years of his term, which ends on Dec. 31, 2026.
