Massive Google-backed solar farm now operating outside Austin

Central Texas has become the new home of one of the largest solar farms in the U.S backed by Google. This major milestone in clean energy represents Google’s largest solar energy investment ever made in the world.

SB Energy announced Friday, October 18, that its three solar projects built side by side — Orion I, Orion II and Orion III — are now in operation, according to a news release . The Orion Solar Belt, located in Milam County about 76 miles north of Austin, is part of Google’s earlier pledge to invest more than $1 billion in Texas this year.

This three-tiered belt will help power Google’s data centers in the Dallas cloud region. Earlier this month, Google signed a lease in the Fort Worth area for a massive warehouse to achieve its goal of supporting cloud and data center infrastructure and help meet growing demand for Google Cloud, AI as well as other digital products and services that people and organizations use every day…
