Although this “house’ looks none too sturdy, it will be occupied by a wicked witch in Sunday evening’s Lighted Montrose Halloween Parade. Can you believe that the builder of this house cut the tree, sawed the lumber, and constructed this abode for the resident wicked witch? While looking as though a good wind might just blow it over, it seems to suit the needs of the witch just fine. Photo by Vic Conlee

When Halloween rolled around in 2020, COVID was running rampant through out lives. Realizing how frustrated everyone was becoming with social distancing and the cancellation of so many normal activities, like trick-or-treating, Laurie Wardlow decided to do something about it, leading to the first Montrose Halloween Parade. A perfect way for folks to come together and enjoy Halloween. The parade maintained social distancing ~ and the kids would still be able to collect their Halloween candy treats. Although not large in length, it successfully accomplished Laurie’s goals.

It turned out to be such a good idea, and so much fun, that the Halloween parade has continued to be held. This year, Montrose Riverfront, Inc., is joining Laurie in growing the parade. They volunteered to sponsor the parade, adding judging of the entries with cash prizes being awarded for first, second, and third place. It is hoped that in the future, additional groups will step up to the plate so the entries can be divided into categories with prizes given for each.

While it’s never possible to know for sure the number of entries that will show up for a parade, we have it on good authority that it will be longer this year, as more than 20 entries have responded. We’ve heard tell that there will be a number of “glow in the dark” horses joining the parade. Glow in the dark horses? Yes, come see how that will be accomplished! It has also been rumored that a headless horseman will be in attendance. Be prepared for lots of excitement, and plenty of candy for the kids!…
